Celebrating our one-year anniversary!

So much has happened this year, and I wish to thank everyone who has given their support in the launch of this book and its continued success. Just last week, the book received its third prize–the Vinnie Ream Award. This award is given by the National League of American Pen Women in four disciplines: Art, Letters, Music, and Multidiscipline.

The award honors Vinnie Ream, who at the age of 18, was the only person to have sculpted a bust of Abraham Lincoln from life.  After his death, Ms. Ream was awarded a congressional commission to sculpt a full-sized statue of Lincoln.

Judges for this award are faculty members from the University of Alabama. The following is their review:

In “The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey,” the author presents the atrocities and horror of the Holocaust. The book captures a history that feels emotionally appropriate as a children’s book but does to shy away from the terrible truth. Though it is a children’s book, it is essentially about courage and kindness and captures a message that transcends age. All readers, children or adults, can take away a strong message about how we have the ability to spread light and stamp out hate.

It was such an honor to receive this award just in time for Lalka’s first anniversary.  I will continue to spread the message of love, compassion, and better understanding of each other–despite our differences.
