Albie is gung-ho for God and country, while Cate rebels against her religious upbringing and protests the war. When tragedy strikes, Cate’s world turns upside down amid the turmoil and idealism of the 1960s and ’70s.
The book covers topics including women’s rights, faith, patriotism, the treatment of veterans returning from Vietnam, and the emergence of the gay liberation movement. All these issues collide through a tumultuous era that echoes today’s political and cultural divide in a nation at war with itself.
